Ripon Hits Six Home Runs In Doubleheader Split At Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - Ripon's softball team doubled their season home run total in just two games on Friday, hitting six balls over the fence in a doubleheader split at Lawrence University. The Red Hawks scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to take game one by a score of 10-7, before narrowly losing the nightcap, 6-5.

Fourteen of the 17 total runs scored in game one came in the final two innings. With Lawrence leading 2-1 entering the sixth inning, Ripon took the lead in the top of that frame on a two-run homer to center by Claire Luebke.

The Vikings then scored four runs in the bottom of that inning to take a 6-3 lead, but Ripon answered with seven runs on seven hits, including a trio of home runs to take control of the game in the top of the seventh. Brennah Bronk led that inning off with a solo homer to left center, before Abby Gilbertson gave the Red Hawks the lead on a three-run homer to center. Luebke would tack on her second homer in as many innings later in the inning, crushing a two-run shot over the center field fence. Bronk then drove in another run with a single to left. Lawrence would score a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough, as Ripon caught the Vikings stealing home to end the game.

Bronk led the Red Hawks by going 4-for-5 at the plate, tying a school record for most hits in a single game. Lexzie Hassemer added two hits, while Luebke also recorded two hits, to go along with four RBI. Luebke's two home runs ties a single game school record. Savanna Trittelwitz earned the win, recording a career-high 11 strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Gilbertson would give Ripon the early lead in the day's second game, singling in a run in the top of the first. Lawrence scored the next five runs, before Luebke smacked her third home run of the day, a solo shot to center to cut the Vikings' lead to three. Gilbertson added a two-run homer the following inning, while Maddie Hablewitz drove in a run with a single in the top of the seventh to tie the score at five. Lawrence would come through in the clutch however, driving in a run on a single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the split.

Gilbertson led Ripon in both hits (3) and RBI (3), while Hassemer notched her second two-hit game of the day. Luebke took the hard-luck loss, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out four in 4.1 solid innings of relief.

Ripon will be in action again Sunday when they'll host Beloit College on what will be Senior Day for the Red Hawks. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Tracy Field in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
