FOND Du LAC, Wis. - In what was a impromptu doubleheader, Ripon's baseball team swept a doubleheader at Marian (Wis.) on Tuesday in their final tune-up before Friday's Midwest Conference Tournament. The Red Hawks won the first game 8-3, before completing the sweep with a 10-4 victory in game two.
Ripon (19-21) was in control of game one from the outset, scoring three times in the first inning, as
Samuel Ott recorded a sac fly, followed by
Cam Stampfl crossing the plate on a wild pitch and
Nick Terrell stealing home. Terrell and Ott each added an RBI in the second inning before Marian (15-24)Â scored their first run of the game i the bottom of the second.Â
The Sabres would add two more runs in the fourth, but it was not enough, as Ripon scored an insurance run on a
Brady Price single in the seventh and two more runs on RBI from
Nick Tenny and
Zach Albrent in the ninth.
Ripon out-hit Marian by a 12-6 margin, led by two hits apiece from
Cormac Madigan, Stampfl, and Tenny.
Rex Bayer (1-0) earned the win, pitching three scoreless relief innings of two-hit ball, while striking out three batters.
Game two saw Marian strike first with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.
Keegan Johnston answered with an RBI single down the right field line to get the Red Hawks on the board in the second. After Marian got that run back in the bottom of that inning, Ripon tied the game on a two-run single up the middle by Tenny. They would then take their first lead of the contest in the sixth when Price scored on a wild pitch and Madigan drove in a run with a single. Ott would add a pair of RBI later in the game, while the other Ripon runs scored on an error and a wild pitch.
Ripon finished with 13 hits, led by
Nick Terrell's 3-for-4 performance, including a pair of doubles, giving him 23 on the season, which breaks the single season school record, which was set 24 years ago. Madigan, Ott, and Warren each added a pair of hits.
Orion Rieden (1-0) earned the victory, allowing just two hits in three scoreless innings of relief, while also striking out three batters.
Ripon will now turn their attention to the double-elimination MWC Tournament, hosted by Lawrence University. Their first game will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday at Don Hawkins Field in Appleton, Wis.
