RIPON, Wis. - One day after getting swept in a doubleheader against Grinnell, Ripon's baseball team redeemed themselves against the same team, defeating the Pioneers 11-1 in eight innings. The Red Hawks finished the game with 15 hits, while Mau Villegas spun a gem on the mound, scattering seven hits without allowing an earned run in the complete game effort.
Ripon (15-17, 11-10 MWC) jumped on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first, scoring on an RBI single by
Samuel Ott, and a double steal, which saw
Nick Terrell cross the plate. Grinnell (12-19, 10-11 MWC) would score their lone run on a sac fly in the top of the second, but Ripon got that run back in the bottom of that frame when
Kaleb Burns doubled, allowing
Jake Pankratz to score. Ott tacked on another RBI single in the fourth, while
Keegan Johnston and Burns added RBI in the sixth. Zach Allbrent drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to give Ripon a 10-1 lead, which was followed one inning later by Terrell's eighth home run of the season and 17th of his career to end the game.
Ott and Burns each led the Red Hawks with three hits and two RBI, while Terrell and
Cam Stampfl each recorded two hits, while scoring a combined five runs. Six of Ripon's 15 hits went for extra bases, including a pair of doubles by Burns.
The win moves Ripon into fourth place in the Midwest Conference standings, just one-half game out of third. The Red Hawks will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll travel to UW-Stout for a non-conference doubleheader. That twinbill will begin at 1 p.m. in Menomonie, Wis., and can be seen live at https://boxcast.tv/view/uw-stout-baseball-vs-ripon-college-may-4-2022-gowh0k6npczb59xitwew.
