RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's softball team ended their 2022 season in style Monday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Northland College. The Red Hawks won game one in convincing fashion, 13-4 in five innings, before completing the sweep with a 9-8 comeback victory in game two.
Northland (8-28) scored the first run of game one, but the rest of the contest was all Ripon (11-27), who saw all 13 of their runs score unearned.
Maddie Hablewitz gave the Red Hawks their first lead of the day with a three-run double to left field, which was followed by an RBI single off the bat of
Andrea Mihaljevich.
Claire Luebke,
Micaela Encarnacion and
Brennah Bronk each added an RBI single, while
Anna Bauer drove in a pair of runs with a triple to left.
Ripon added to their lead in the third when the reigning Midwest Conference Performer of the Week
Abby Gilbertson continued to swing a hot bat with a two-run single to right. Hablewitz would then double home another run, before Mihaljevich singled in another runner to make the score 13-1.
The Red Hawks finished the game with 11 hits, with Gilbertson, Hablewitz, Mihaljevich, and Luebke each finishing with two base knocks. Luebke (3-7) also earned the win in the circle, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three batters.
The second game of the day again saw Northland strike first, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Ripon would tie things up in the third on RBI doubles from seniors Luebke and Encarnacion. One inning later, Hablewitz gave Ripon the lead with an RBI double to right, followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of Mihaljevich. Luebke would also add an RBI that inning on a sac fly to center, giving Ripon a 5-2 advantage.
That lead lasted less than an inning, as Northland scored three runs in the fifth, before adding three more in the sixth. Trailing 8-5 entering the bottom of the sixth, Ripon rallied, scoring first on a fielding error, which was followed by a three-run home run off the bat of Encarnacion in what was her final bat as a Red Hawk. That marked Encarnacion's second homer of the season and sixth of her career.
She finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. Hablewitz and Mihaljevich each added two hits, while also scoring two runs apiece. Bronk earned the victory, pitching two innings of relief, while striking out one batter.
Ripon ends the season with 72 doubles, which sets a new school record, breaking the previous mark by 13. Their 278 hits are the third-highest total in program history, while their team batting average of .283 ranks ninth. The Red Hawks also finished the year with 14 home runs, which is the second-highest total in school history, just five shy of the school record, which was set in 2011. They scored 160 runs on the year, which ranks fifth all-time, while their 150 RBI ranks fourth.
