Fast Start Propels Ripon Past Maranatha Baptist

WATERTOWN, Wisconsin – Kaley Kowal broke out of a five-match scoreless streak in a big way and the Ripon women's soccer program defeated host Maranatha Baptist 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

In the process, Ripon (5-4-3) ended a five-match winless streak and won its first match away from home in 2023.

In the first half, Kowal opened the scoring with a goal in the 12th minute on a feed from Martina Palazzolo. In the 29th minute, the Palazzolo to Kowal connection found paydirt once again, as the freshman found the senior for Kowal's second goal of the game and eighth of the season.

The Red Hawks weren't done in the first half, however, as freshman Rebecca Roszel found the back of the net in the 40th minute off of a pass from Palazzolo. This was Roszel's third goal of the season, and first since September 2. Ripon held a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Ripon only conceded one shot in the first half, out-shooting Maranatha Baptist (3-7-0) 14-1 in the first 45 minutes.

The pace slowed down in the second half, as Ripon only mustered 8 shots and was unable to score again. However, strong defense preserved the sixth shutout of the season for the Red Hawks.

Overall, Ripon held a 22-4 (6-2) advantage in shots. The Red Hawks had 7 corner kicks while the Sabercats had none. A total of 7 fouls were called in a clean match, with 6 called on Ripon.

Kowal had a team-high 5 shots, while Alyssa Klementzos, Jessi Griepentrog and Roszel each had 3.

Andreanna Wilke played the first half in goal. Britt Hable entered the game after halftime and made 2 saves in the second stanza.

UP NEXT: Ripon jumps back into Midwest Conference action on Saturday (October 14) for a 12 p.m. match against Cornell. This will be the program's first match at Hopp Stadium.
