Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mahone Drops 24 to Lead Men's Basketball to Victory

The Ripon College men's basketball team avenged an earlier loss by defeating Cornell College, 74-64, Friday night.

Jaylen Mahone helped lead the Red Hawks to victory, scoring a game-high 24 points and tying for the game-high with 5 rebounds in the win. Cade Tackmier had 18 points and matched Mahone with 5 rebounds, while Drew Jorgensen had 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers. Luke Meinholz had 8 points in 27 minutes off the bench.

Ripon jumped out to a nine-point lead just over three minutes into the game, and despite a quick run by Cornell, the Red Hawks had their advantage into double-digits with 12:45 left in the opening half. Ripon maintained a comfortable lead midway through the first half, but a 4-minute scoreless stretch allowed Cornell to make it a three-point game at 21-18. The Red Hawks never relinquished the lead, however, and used a late run to turn that three-point lead to 12 points before going into the locker rooms up 38-31.

Cornell scored the first basket of the second half to trim Ripon's lead to five points, but that would be as close as Cornell would get as by the 16-minute mark, the Red Hawks had a 10-point lead and later, a 17-point advantage with 12:45 left in the second half. Ripon would expand that lead to a game-high 19 points before coasting over the final 10-plus minutes to the 10-point victory.

Ripon will look to extend their win streak to four games on Saturday, February 11th when the Red Hawks play host to Monmouth College. The Alumni Day game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
