Red Hawks Split Opening Day Twin Bill As Offense Explodes

RHINELANDER, Wis. – The Ripon softball team opened the 2023 campaign on Saturday, falling 7-3 to St. Scholastica in the opener before bouncing back in the nightcap with a 9-1 win over Northland. The Red Hawks are in the middle of an 18-game road swing to begin the season before the home opener on March 28.

How It Happened:
  • Right fielder Mikaela Lawrence opened the season with a bang, launching a home run out of the Hodag Dome to give the Red Hawks an early lead.
  • St. Scholastica answered with a pair of runs in the home half to take their first lead before Ripon third baseman Abby Gilbertson evened the score with a solo shot in the top of the half.
  • Shortstop Anna Bauer belted Ripon's third home run of the game to put the Red Hawks back in front 3-2, but the Saints rattled off five runs to answer and never looked back.
  • Hadley Berendsen tripled in the first run of the game in the second inning, but Northland got it back with a single to right field two innings later.
  • Ripon's offense came alive in Saturday's second game, as the Red Hawks erupted for eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth and held on for their first run-rule victory of the season.
Stats From The Day:
  • Four different Red Hawks picked up a hit in Saturday's opener, while three drove in a run.
  • Berendsen and catcher Maddie Hablewitz each picked up two hits against Northland, while the latter was credited with three RBI.
  • Kalen Berger made her season debut in the circle in the nightcap, going the distance and picking up six strikeouts to earn her first victory of the season.
  • Lawrence, Gilbertson and Bauer were the only Red Hawks to pick up a hit in both games.
Beyond the Box Score:
  • Ripon had to wait until the eighth game of the season to pick up its' first win last spring.
  • The Red Hawks totaled two wins via mercy rule in 2022, and those came on April 15 and May 2.
On Deck:
  • Ripon closes out the first tournament of the year on Sunday with another doubleheader in Rhinelander. First pitch against UW-Stevens Point is slated for 11:00 a.m., with a rematch against Northland set to follow.
