MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Ripon College baseball team rallied to a 3-2 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy this morning at the USA Stadium Complex. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 3-5 on the season and 3-2 on its Spring Trip while USMMA falls to 4-4 on the season.
With twos out in the top of the first,
Brock Warren kept the inning alive when he doubled to left field. Fellow teammate
Jack Anderson walked to give the Red Hawks runners on first and second. An error by the USMMA shortstop allowed
Evan Olson to reach first and load the bases for Ripon.
Kaleb Burns put the team on the board when he walked to drive Warren to make it 1-0 Ripon before a line out to the shortstop ended the threat.
USMMA in the bottom of the second used a double, single, and double to take a 2-1 lead, its only lead of the game.
For the next two innings, both teams went scoreless until the top of the fifth when Ripon took advantage of an error by the first baseman to keep the inning going. The error allowed
Cam Stampfl to reach first and later moved to second when Warren walked. Both runners then executed a double steal to give the Red Hawks runners in scoring position. A passed ball by the USMMA catcher allowed Stampfl to cross the plate and tie the game 2-2. Warren moved up to third on the play. Anderson kept the inning going as he was plunked and later took second on a wild pitch. USMMA was able to get out of the inning when Olson flew out to left.
With the game tied at two going into the top of the eighth, Warren singled through the left side to leadoff and then advanced to second off of Anderson's sacrifice bunt. Anderson was out at first on the play. Warren then picked up his third stolen base of the game as he took third. He later came in to score to put Ripon in front 3-2 on Olson's RBI single to center.
The Ripon pitching staff pitched seven scoreless innings after giving up two runs in the second. Starter
Blaine Wahlen scattered seven hits over five innings allowing two earned runs. Reliever
Rex Bayer picked up his first win of the season as he threw three strong innings and not allowing a single runner to reach.
Brock Turkington earned his second save of the season in the process.
Warren finished the day going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, three stolen bases, a double, and a walk. His three stolen bases are a season-high and this is the fifth time this season he has recorded multiple hits.
Ripon is back in action tomorrow afternoon when it faces Westfield State University with the first pitch slated for 2:30 pm.
