Baseball Sweeps Conference Doubleheader Against Chicago

RIPON, Wis.- Ripon College baseball team plated 25 runs to sweep a doubleheader against the University of Chicago this afternoon at home. The Red Hawks took the season series and look to go for the sweep when they travel to Chicago on April 26 to play the third game. Ripon moves to 14-11 on the season and 9-4 in the Midwest Conference while the Maroons fall to 14-13 and 8-7 in the conference.

Nick Tenny finished the day going 5-for-7 with five runs scored, an RBI, a pair of doubles, and a stolen base.

As a team, the Red Hawks tallied 21 hits on the day with 10 in game one and 11 in game two. Ripon has registered 10 or more hits in its last four games.  When the Red Hawks record 10 or more hits in a game they are 9-4 on the season.

Ripon is back in action tomorrow when the host conference rival Knox College in a doubleheader that starts at 12 pm.

Game 1: Ripon 11, Chicago 10

Down 6-4 going into the bottom of the fifth, Brock Warren took advantage of a fielding error by the Chicago third baseman to reach first. He then moved to second off of Evan Olson's single to left.  Kyler Hickman hit into a fielder's choice that allowed him to make it safely to first and second Warren to third. Olson was out at second on the unassisted play by the second baseman.

Following a Chicago pitching change, Warren scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game and Hickman moved up 90 feet as well. Tenny's RBI single to center scored Hickman from second and tie the game, 6-6. Tenny later moved to third off of Remington Cox's single to center. Cox then stole second to give Ripon two runners in scoring position with one out. Tenny came a cross to score to give Ripon a 7-6 lead when Alex Panktratz grounded out to the pitcher. Cox moved to third on the play. Kaleb Burns was plunked to give the Red Hawks runners on the corners. An error by the second baseball on Burns' stolen base attempt allowed him to reach safely and let Cox score to make it, 8-6.

Both teams traded runs for the next three innings to knot the score 10-10 going into the ninth. Chicago left the go-ahead run stranded on second in its half of the ninth.

With one down in the bottom of the ninth, Cox walked and took advantage of an error by the second base to take second off of Pankratz's fielder's choice.  Cormac Madigan's game-winning RBI single to right with two outs scored Cox from second to give the Red Hawks the 11-10 victory.

Ripon reliever Brock Turkington earned his first win (1-1) of the season. He allowed one hit in an inning of work while fanning one.

Game 2: Ripon 14, Chicago 2- 7 innings

The Red Hawks jumped on the board early in game two when they plated seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. Madigan got things rolling when he reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop. He then stole second and later scored off of Cam Stampfl's RBI single through the right side.  Warren sent Stampfl to second when he singled through the left side for Ripon to put runners on the corners.  Both runners moved up 90 feet each when Olson flew out to center for the first out of the inning. Hickman's double to right field drove in both runners to give Ripon a 3-0 lead.

Tenny kept the inning going when he singled down the left-field line to put runners on first and third. Another error by the shortstop allowed Cox to reach first and send Tenny to third. Hickman scored on the play to make it, 4-0. Pankratz's RBI single through the left side plated Tenny and sent Cox to second with one out. Burns wore one as he was plunked to load the bases for the Red Hawks. 

Madigan batted around to keep the inning going as he hit into a fielder's choice that scored Cox from third but Burns was out at second but a throwing error from the second to first allowed Pankratz to score as well to make it 7-0 before a strikeout ended the inning.

Ripon scored a run in the third, the fourth, the fifth, and four in the sixth to go up 14-2 and run-rule the Maroons.

Starter Mitchell Lukasik pitched a complete game to pick up the win to move to 4-1 on the season. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while tying a season-high seven strikeouts. The last time he struck out seven was against Beloit back on April 8 in a 6-1 win.
