Red Hawks Split To Open MWC Action

RIPON, Wis. – After seeing eight straight games affected by inclement weather, the Ripon softball team finally played its first home games of the season on Friday, hosting Monmouth in Midwest Conference action. The Red Hawks took the opener by a final of 8-3 before falling 5-0 in the nightcap.

The Scots started the scoring with a sac fly in the third inning, the lone run of the first three and a half innings of the ballgame. Ripon's offense came to life in a big way in the fourth, which proved to be the difference in the game.

With the bases loaded and just one out, Lexzie Hassemer plated two runs on an infield single to give Ripon a 2-1 edge, forcing Monmouth to make a pitching change. The new arm hit the first Red Hawk hitter she saw to make it 3-1, and Mikaela Lawrence reached on a fielder's choice to add to the damage.

Brennah Bronk drew a walk to push the Ripon lead to 4-1, and Abby Gilbertson followed with a single into center field that brought in two more. Anna Bauer lined an RBI single for the final run of the inning, and when the dust settled, the Red Hawks had struck for a total of seven runs on four huge base hits.

Riley Breider singled to center in the fifth, driving in a run as the Ripon lead swelled to 8-1. Monmouth got two runs back in the top of the seventh inning, but the damage had been done, and the Red Hawks opened MWC play with a win for the first time since 2019.

Bronk went the distance in the circle for the Red Hawks, striking out two hitters en route to her third win of the season. Additionally, she delivered her fifth complete game of the year, tying Kalen Berger for the team lead.

Monmouth again struck first in the nightcap, scoring a run in the opening inning before adding two more in the fourth and the final two in the seventh. Ripon's offense stalled in Game 2, though Bronk added two more hits and Gilbertson came away with her team-best sixth double of the season.

The Red Hawks continue MWC play on Saturday, when they host Cornell in another doubleheader. First pitch from Tracy Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
