MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Ripon College baseball team swept its final Midwest Conference doubleheader of the season to win the season series against Cornell. With the wins today, Ripon will be the second seed in the Midwest Conference Baseball Championship next weekend. The Red Hawks are now 22-15 overall and 15-8 in the MWC while Cornell falls to 20-19 on the season and 10-13 in the conference.
Evan Olson finished the day going 3-for-8 with three RBIs two runs scored, and a double. His double was the team's only extra-base hit in either game.
Ripon will close out the conference season tomorrow when it looks to go for the sweep at Cornell. First pitch is set for noon.
Game 1: Ripon 1, Cornell 0
Both teams went scoreless for five innings before Ripon got on the board in the top of the sixth.
Kaleb Burns got things started when he walked and later moved to second on a fielding error by the third baseman. The error allowed
Cormac Madigan to make it to first safely. Cornell was able to get to fast outs on a pop to the pitcher for the first out and then was able to double up Madigan at first on the play.
With two outs now,
Kyler Hickman was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second again. Burns later came around to score when
Evan Olson doubled to right field to drive in the game's only run before the inning ended on a groundout to short.
That one run was enough for starting pitcher
Brock Warren, who allowed six hits over in eight innings of work while striking out three. Warren picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-3 on the year. Reliever
Brock Turkington pitched a perfect ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.
Game 2: Ripon 7, Cornell 5
Trailing for the first time today, Ripon erased Cornell's 1-0 lead going into the top of the fourth when it pushed four runs across on five hits. With one out,
Cam Stampfl and Hickman singled back-to-back to give the Red Hawks runners on first and second. Olson's RBI single to center scored Stampfl to tie the game 1-1. Hickman moved up to second on the play.
Nick Tenny's groundout to first allowed both runners to move up another 90 feet with two outs. Hickman then scored off of
Alex Pankratz's RBI single to right to make it, 2-1. Olson moved to third to put runners on the corners. A passed ball allowed Olson to score and send Pankratz to second. He then later scored from second when
Remington Cox singled to center to give Ripon a 4-1 lead before the inning ended.
Ripon added three more runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-1 but Cornell chipped away as it plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to make it a 7-3 game.
Cornell tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth when it pushed another two runs across to make it 7-5 but that is all it would get.
Starter
Mitchell Lukasik picked up his team-leading sixth win (6-1) of the season. He allowed three runs (all earned) on 11 hits over eight innings of work. He fanned three in the process.
Reliever Turkington picked up his seventh save of the season and his second on the day.
