RIPON, Wisconsin – The Ripon women's basketball program made history on Saturday afternoon, defeating Cornell 61-46 inside Weiske Gymnasium to win its first 10 Midwest Conference games for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
Bonnie Jensen and
Ella Ten Pas combined for 42 points, nearly outscoring Cornell (8-11, 6-4 MWC) by themselves as Ripon (13-7, 10-0) has now taken a four-game lead in the MWC standings with just six games to play.
STANDOUT HAWKS
- Senior forward Bonnie Jensen had a game and season-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. She also had 7 rebounds and a career-high 6 assists.
- Junior forward Ella Ten Pas netted her eighth double-double of the season – and third in the last four games – with 20 points and 12 rebounds on 8-of-13 shooting. She had a double-double in the first half alone with 12 points and 10 boards in the first 20 minutes of play.
- Sophomore guard Natalie Rauwolf scored in double figures for the eighth time this season, and third consecutive game, with 12 points and 2 rebounds.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Cornell scored the first points of the game, but Ripon answered with the next seven to prompt a Rams timeout. Cornell then scored five of the next seven points, but Rauwolf answered with one of her two triples to give Ripon a five-point cushion. The lead grew to seven in the frame after layups by
Anna Cunningham and
Laney Havolvitz as the Red Hawks were ahead 16-11 following the first quarter.
Kali March hit a three to open the second stanza's scoring, but Ripon responded with a 10-0 spurt to lead 26-14 halfway through the quarter while holding Cornell scoreless for over five minutes. A basket by Jensen and free throws by Ten Pas gave Ripon a 30-19 lead at the break. March scored all eight of Cornell's points in the quarter.
Ripon roared out of the intermission, scoring the first nine points to lead by 20. In the process, the Red Hawks kept the Rams off the board for the first four and a half minutes of the period. The lead grew to as many as 22 in the frame following an old-fashioned, three-point play by Jensen at the 4:41 mark. Ripon held a 20-point cushion with the fourth quarter yet to play.
Ripon's lead was at least 20 for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. A 9-0 Cornell run in the later stages of the frame made things interesting as the Rams only trailed by 13 with 3:33 left. However, the Red Hawks would allow them to get no closer as Ripon has now won its last 10 meetings with Cornell dating back to 2017.
