RIPON, Wisconsin – Facing one of two remaining unbeatens in the Midwest Conference, the Ripon men's basketball program fell 98-91 to Grinnell on Thursday night inside Weiske Gymnasium.
Kolby Williams (20 points),
Connor Spielvogel (20 points) and
Luke Meinholz (11 rebounds and 8 assists) each had career outings, but Ripon (2-11, 0-4 MWC) let a second-half lead slip away as Grinnell (10-2, 5-0 MWC) won in Ripon for the first time since January 2015.
STANDOUT HAWKS
- Sophomore forward Kolby Williams scored a career and team-high 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting, adding 13 rebounds (4 offensive) and blocking 3 shots.
- Senior guard Connor Spielvogel also had a career and team-high in points, adding 20 off the bench while sinking 6 three-pointers (also a career-high). He also grabbed 4 rebounds.
- Junior guard Luke Meinholz collected 18 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists for his second double-double of the season.
- Senior guard Cade Tackmier contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The teams went back and forth to start, with neither team leading by more than three in the first seven minutes. With Ripon trailing 18-17, a 9-0 Ripon run gave the Red Hawks an eight-point lead halfway through the frame. The advantage grew to 10 before a 6-0 Grinnell run gave the Pioneers life. A 7-0 spurt by the opposition put Ripon in a 41-40 hole with two and half minutes remaining in the half, but baskets by Meinholz,
William Ryan and Williams gave the Red Hawks a slim 46-45 lead at halftime.
Grinnell wasted little time retaking the lead in the second half, scoring the first six points of the stanza. Ripon finally reclaimed the lead with 14:32 left in the game on a layup by
Cameron Ford, but the Pioneers responded and scored on the next possession. Both teams jostled for the advantage in the middle stages of the second half until Grinnell, leading 76-73, built a double-digit lead with a 9-0 run which prompted a Ripon timeout. The Red Hawks cut their deficit to four with under a minute left, but the Pioneers salted the game away at the free throw line to win their 10th game of the season.
KEY STATS
- Ripon shot a scintillating 55.2% (37-of-67) from the field for its second-best shooting performance of the season.
- The Red Hawks grabbed a season-high 49 rebounds (compared to Grinnell's 30) and dished out a season-high 19 assists (to the Pioneers' 13).
- Grinnell forced 33 Ripon turnovers and only turned it over 13 times itself. The Pioneers scored 35 points off turnovers, while the Red Hawks only mustered 11.
- Overall, there were 8 ties and 16 lead changes.
- Jordan Lee had a game-high 31 points to lead Grinnell, while Kai Te Huki and Gabe Garcia each had 17 points for the Pioneers.
