RIPON, Wisconsin – Viviana Alba of the Ripon women's soccer program scored three minutes into the match on Saturday, but Grinnell rallied in the second half with two scores as the Pioneers left Ripon with a 2-1 victory at Hopp Stadium.
Alba scored her second of the season for Ripon (2-7-3, 0-2-1 MWC), beautifully lifting the ball past the Grinnell (5-3-1, 2-1 MWC) keeper to give Ripon the early advantage. The score remained 1-0 through half, though both teams had chances to finish for the final 42 minutes.
After a Grinnell free kick just outside the box in the 59th minute, the ball bounced around the goal following a tremendous save by
Britt Hable. However, it was eventually kicked in by the Pioneers and the match was tied.
Six minutes later, the Pioneers scored the go-ahead goal, the final tally on Saturday's ledger. The Red Hawks made a late push in the final minutes, but were unable to score and dropped a heartbreaker at home.
The Pioneers outshot Ripon 6-2 in the final 45 minutes, though the momentum swung both directions at times. Overall, Grinnell had a 14-5 advantage in total shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.
Alyssa Klementzos and
Alex Siudzinski led Ripon with two shots apiece, while Alba tallied one on her goal.
Hable made nine saves in goal, playing all 90 minutes.
