TACOMA, Washington – The Ripon women's basketball program got off to a blazing start and never looked back on Saturday night, blasting last year's NCAA Tournament participant Puget Sound 80-52 inside Memorial Fieldhouse.
Ripon (1-0) allowed just four points in the first quarter, opened the game on a 26-6 run and never trailed against a Puget Sound (0-1) program that defeated an NCAA Division II opponent by 15 in an exhibition two weeks ago.
STANDOUT HAWKS
- In her collegiate debut, freshman guard Karsyn Nelson scored a team-high 19 points, including 12 in the first half. She shot 8-of-13 from the field and chipped in four assists, three steals and three rebounds.
- Junior guard Natalie Rauwolf picked up right where she left off last season, scoring 15 first half points on Saturday night and ending the evening with 18. She made a quartet of three-pointers.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Ripon could not have asked for a better start to the season – on the Red Hawks' second possession, Rauwolf hit a triple and Ripon was off to the races. A 7-0 run put the visitors up 12-2 as the defense kept Puget Sound out of the basket for nearly five minutes. Ripon hit five unanswered free throws in the final 2:33 of the quarter and took a 17-4 advantage into the second stanza.
The second quarter was similarly successful for a potent Ripon offense that scored the first seven points, keeping the Loggers off the scoreboard until the clock read 6:42. The Red Hawks' smallest lead of the quarter was 15 as Ripon ended the half on a 7-0 spurt to go up 44-17 at the break.
Ripon continued to apply pressure in the third quarter as its lead was at least 25 for the entire period. Another triple by Rauwolf halfway through the frame gave the Red Hawks a 57-22 lead – their biggest of the quarter to date – until a three-pointer by Fahrney
made it a 35-point cushion at 66-31. A Fahrney layup with 30 seconds left in the frame gave Ripon a 71-39 advantage, and the Red Hawks took that spread into the fourth quarter.
With the benches emptied in the final quarter, Ripon continued to lead by at least 30 points for a majority of the frame.
McKenzie Bestor knocked down a jumper with 3:11 left in the game to give Ripon a 34-point lead (79-45) and from there, the Red Hawks coasted to the resounding season-opening win.
