KISSIMMEE, Florida – The Ripon softball program opened its Florida trip with a pair of defeats on Sunday, falling 3-0 to North Central (Ill.) and 2-0 to Trinity (Conn.) at Fortune Road Park.
In the opener against North Central (4-1), Ripon (0-4) got a great outing on the mound from freshman
Kenzie Pahang in her second career start but couldn't generate enough offense to get over the hump against the Cardinals.
The Red Hawks reached base in each of the first five innings – and had a runner in scoring position in the first, second, fourth and fifth frames – but were unable to score. Ripon's best offensive chance came in the top of the second when
Mikaela Lawrence singled with two outs, but Pahang was thrown out at the plate to end the threat.
NCC scored solo runs in the second and fourth innings on RBI singles and added its final run of the day in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double.
Kayla Cruz and
Nadiyah Huizar led Ripon with two hits apiece, while Lawrence,
Maddie Hablewitz, Hadley Berendsen and
Anna Bauer each had a base knock.
Pahang tossed all six innings, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs. She struck out one and walked one across 80 pitches. Juliana Maude picked up her third win of the season for North Central, throwing the final 2.1 innings in relief while only giving up one hit.
In Sunday's afternoon against Trinity (2-2),
Kalen Berger was terrific on the mound for the Red Hawks. The junior threw her 10th career complete game, giving up nine hits and a pair of earned runs. She also stranded seven runners on base. Trinity scored once in the second on a two-out, RBI single and once in the fifth on a two-out wild pitch.
Taylor Stowers shined for the Bantams on the mound, limiting Ripon to just one baserunner and one hit – a
Daniella Orozco double in the second inning.
NEXT UP: Ripon plays twice more on Monday (March 11), facing Salem State and Macalester at 8 a.m. CT and 10:15 a.m. CT respectively from Clermont, Florida.
