DAVENPORT, Florida – The Ripon baseball program couldn't keep up with UW-Stout on Monday afternoon, falling to the Blue Devils 12-5 at Northeast Regional Park.
UW-Stout (2-1) jumped on Ripon in the opening inning, launching a solo home run three batters in. Ripon (2-5) had a runner on third with nobody out in the bottom of the second, but went down quietly to return the momentum to the Blue Devils. In the top half of the third, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly on back-to-back at-bats gave Stout a 3-0 cushion.
Ripon would answer, though, as
Alex Pankratz singled home
Owen Gerhardt to trim its deficit with plenty of time left. However, the Red Hawks couldn't capitalize with runners on second and third and one out in the inning to keep the score 3-1.
Stout had an answer in the fifth, doubling its lead on a two-run homer, and scored three more in the sixth to lead 8-1 with 12 outs to go.
In the top of the eight, UW-Stout continued to put pressure on Ripon – four consecutive at-bats resulted in runs for the Blue Devils to make it 12-1 after back-to-back RBI doubles, an error and a sacrifice fly.
Ripon countered in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four.
Kaleb Burns reached on an error,
Ian Plaster recorded an RBI groundout and
Julian Fulwiler knocked in a run with a single to make it 12-5 in favor of the visitors. However, Ripon went down quietly in the ninth and fell to the fellow Wisconsin school.
Offensively,
Jack Anderson and
Brady Wotruba were the lone Red Hawks with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 apiece. Pankratz,
Kyler Hickman,
Julian Fulwiler and
Crete Slattery all recorded hits as well.
Dallan Lopez took the loss for Ripon. He pitched 5.0 innings, surrendering 10 hits and five earned runs while punching out five.
