Bats Stay Hot in Win at Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wisconsin – The Ripon baseball program brought its hot-hitting to Stevens Point after a 17-run outburst at home on Monday, taking down the host Pointers 12-9 on Tuesday afternoon at Zimmermann Field.

The win was the Red Hawks' first over a WIAC opponent in almost five years to the day – a 3-1 win at #16 UW-Whitewater on May 1, 2019.

Stevens Point (22-13) struck first and put up a three-spot in the opening inning, highlighted by a home run on the first pitch of the game. However, Ripon (12-20) punched back in an enormous way in the innings to follow. A seven-run second inning pushed Ripon in front as the Red Hawks struck in a variety of ways. After Nick Tenny and Jack Anderson walked, sandwiched around a Gabriel Zielinski double, Eli DiCarlo singled up the middle to put Ripon on the board. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kaleb Burns ripped a two-run single to right, tying the game up.

After a UWSP pitching change, Nick Terrell kept the inning going with an RBI single, and Tenny reached on a fielding error two batters later which scored two more runs. Zielinski recorded a base hit for the second time in the inning, singling home Kyler Hickman and capping off an impressive seven-run Ripon inning.

The Red Hawks weren't done in the third. After DiCarlo led off the inning with a double, Brock Peterson reached on a Pointer error, scoring DiCarlo, and pushing Ripon ahead even further. Moments later, Terrell produced another two-out hit to bring home Peterson and Ripon held its biggest lead of the afternoon at 9-3.

Point got solo runs back in the third and fourth innings, but a solo home run by Terrell in the fifth – his third RBI of the day – put Ripon in front 10-5 halfway through the contest.

With Ripon nursing a 10-6 lead, Tenny scored on an attempted double steal in the sixth, while Hickman doubled home Burns in the seventh as the Red Hawks continued to push the envelope offensively. Point got one back in the seventh, but Brandon Peace stranded two Pointers in scoring position to end the inning and preserve Ripon's five-run lead.

UWSP got solo runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but Peace slammed the door on the Pointers to give the Red Hawks a signature non-conference win.

Terrell had a career day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Zielinski (3-for-4, RBI, run, walk) and DiCarlo (3-for-4, RBI, 2 run) also had three-hit games as Ripon pounded out 15 hits as a team. Tenny (2-for-5, 2 run, walk), Burns (1-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 run), Hickman (1-for-4, RBI, run) and Anderson (1-for2, walk, run) had solid days at the plate as well.

On the mound, five pitchers saw action, while Matthew Stuczynski picked up his first win of the season after throwing two innings of three-hit ball, surrendering just one earned run with two punchouts.

NEXT UP: Ripon hosts Lawrence on Wednesday (May 1) at 4 p.m. for the Red Hawks' final home game of 2024.
