DUBUQUE, Iowa – Two freshmen of the Ripon men's soccer program scored second-half goals to help the Red Hawks overcome Emmaus Bible College 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Jack Fish Field.
Seth Schroeder notched his second career goal – and second in the last three days – with the game-winner in the 70th minute, assisted by sophomore
Thomas Geocaris. He was followed by
Gustavo Herrera, who scored his first career goal in the 82nd minute to give Ripon (2-1) its second consecutive win. Geocaris also assisted on the Red Hawks' second goal of the game.
The Red Hawks tallied 38 total shots against Emmaus on Wednesday (2-1), including 17 on goal. It is the second-most total shots in a single game in school history, only second to the 43 the Red Hawks took against Adrian in 2003.
Ripon controlled the pace of the game the entire first half, but unfortunately did not have any goals to show for it. The Red Hawks outshot Emmaus 14-2 overall in the first 45 – and 9-0 on goal – but were unable to find the back of the net as the teams headed into half deadlocked at zero. However, the offense continued to grind away in the second half, scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to collect another victory.
Ripon goalkeeper
Bennett Ash made his first career start, picking up the win and recording a clean sheet. He and the Ripon defense faced just three shots while Ash made one save.
Herrera led Ripon with six total shots, while
Ivan Barrientos,
Eli Dietzel and
Nick Bellisle had five apiece. Schroeder netted four as 15 different Red Hawks found their way into the shot column.
