MONMOUTH, Illinois – The Ripon women's basketball program allowed just four points in the first quarter and coasted to a 71-38 victory at Monmouth on Saturday inside Glennie Gymnasium.
Defeating Monmouth (4-12, 1-6 MWC) for the eighth consecutive time, Ripon (12-4, 6-1 MWC) held the Scots to 1-of-19 shooting in the opening period and raced out to a 25-point halftime lead. Each of the last five meetings between the schools has resulted in a double-digit Ripon victory.
STANDOUT HAWKS
- Senior guard Anna Fahrney tied for the team lead with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting off the bench, adding two rebounds and two steals.
- Senior forward Ella Ten Pas also tied a team-high with 11 points, grabbing 15 rebounds for her 18th career double-double. She had a team-high four blocks to go along with two steals.
- Freshman guard Halle Van Horn chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.
- Freshman guard Karsyn Nelson contributed 10 points, three rebounds and two blocks.
- Junior guard Natalie Rauwolf added nine points, three rebounds and three steals.
- Sophomore guard Laney Havlovitz scored seven points, chipping in three assists and three steals.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Rauwolf opened the scoring with a three-pointer on Ripon's second possession, and the Red Hawks scored the first nine points of the game as Monmouth was kept off the scoreboard for the first five minutes. A 4-0 Ripon spurt pushed the lead to double digits at 13-2, and the Red Hawks led by at least nine the rest of the quarter. Ripon scored the final six points of the quarter and took a 19-4 advantage into the second stanza.
Ripon started the second quarter with six consecutive points and prompted a quick Monmouth timeout at the 8:51 mark. A mini 4-0 Monmouth run brought the Scots within 18 at 28-10, but that would be the closest they'd get the rest of the half. Ripon followed with a 7-0 run, and though the teams traded baskets from there, the Red Hawks led 43-18 at the break.
Monmouth opened the second half scoring, but Ripon responded with the next seven points to grab a 29-point edge. The Red Hawks kept at least a 26-point cushion from there on out, and though the Scots mustered a pair of three-pointers in the period, they hit just one two-point shot. Ripon's defense allowed just one made field goal in the final four minutes and led 57-29 after three.
Van Horn connected on a jumper with 7:37 left in the game to give Ripon its biggest lead of the afternoon thus far (63-33) and the Red Hawks rolled from there. Ripon held Monmouth without a made field goal for over nine minutes as the lead never got smaller than 30 for the last seven and a half minutes.
Sarah Trzinski scored the final two points of the game at the charity stripe and Ripon secured the win.
KEY STATS
- Ripon shot 41.0% from the field (25-of-61) and allowed Monmouth to shoot just 17.5% from the field (10-of-57). Saturday marked the second consecutive game that a Red Hawk opponent shot less than 20.0% from the floor.
- Both teams were 2-of-13 from three-point range.
- The Red Hawks had a 45-31 advantage in rebounds, and turned 26 Monmouth turnovers into 21 points.
- Ripon had a 36-12 edge in paint points and a 15-6 advantage in second-chance points.
- Ashley Jones led Monmouth with a game-high 19 points.
