Red Hawks Earn Conference Win As Williams Nets First Career Goal

RIPON, Wis. -- Ripon College men's soccer (6-3-1, 1-1 MWC) earned their first conference victory of the year this Wednesday, Oct 1, against the Cornell College Rams (2-7, 0-1 MWC). Freshman Ethan Williams (San Antonio, Tex., Brandeis HS) would score his first career goal for the Red Hawks, the sole goal of the game.

The game would open with a turn for the Red Hawks. After Ripon's forward would slip past the Cornell defense early in the first half for a look at the goal, the Rams defender would opt to foul the attacker, with the visitor given a straight red card for breaking up the goal scoring opportunity. Facing only ten men on the field for the remaining 75 minutes of play, Ripon would end up out shooting the opposition 13-3 for the game, with goalkeeper Drew Seyfer (Thiensville, Wis., Homestead HS) scooping up the only on-target shot attempt from the Rams.

Williams would score the deciding goal for the game in the 29th minute, blasting the ball into the net from close range off a pass from senior Andre Robertson (O'Fallon, Ill., O'Fallon Township HS). Maintaining the one goal separation through the first half, the teams would continue the same way through the second, with the final whistle eventually called on a 1-0 Red Hawks victory.

The game saw a physical level of play from both teams, with the programs combining for 26 total fouls across the game, including five yellow cards and the aforementioned red.

The Red Hawks return to action with another conference contest on Saturday, Oct 4, on the road against Grinnell. The Pioneers enter the contest 3-5-3 this season, coming off a 1-0 win over Monmouth.
