APPLETON, Wis. -- Freshman
Ethan Arts (Suamico, Wis., Bay Port HS) has won his fifth straight Super Smash Bros Ultimate tournament, taking first at the Phantasm #206 event held in Appleton. Arts went undefeated in the double elimination event, taking the tournament through the Winner's Bracket in a 3-0 Grand Final.
Arts's bracket play began after earning a first round bye in round robin competition, going 6-0 in games to advance to the Winners Quarter-Final. A Steve main, Arts swept his first two opponents, going 2-0 against a Pyra player before taking down a Game & Watch main 3-0. Arts would face a test in the Winner's Final, taking on a strong Sephiroth opponent, with the Red Hawk coming back from 2-1 down, advancing to the Winner's Final with a 3-2 win. Arts would face the same opponent in the Grand Finals, taking the tournament with a 3-0 victory as his opponent varied between Sephiroth and Pac-Man.
Ripon would have a handful of other competitors in the tournament. Freshman
Ruby Rosemary (Green Bay, Wis., Bay Port HS), playing as Sonic, would progress to the Winners Quarter-Final, dropping a 2-1 game to the eventual Grand Finalist playing as Pac-Man, before being eliminated in Round 4 of the losers bracket by a Bowser main. Junior
Sam Waring (Franklin, Wis., Franklin HS) would fall in bracket play competing as Isabelle, dropping a 1-2 match to a Greninja player. Freshmen
Cooper Ahrens (Fond Du Lac, Wis., Winnebago Lutheran HS) and
Lyric Goelzer (Baraboo, Wis., Baraboo HS) would both drop their first matches of bracket play, with Ahrens competing as Byleth and Goelzer switching between Rosalina and Banjo & Kazooie.
