Men's Track and Field Wins Dick Hendricks Invite, Cortes Breaks Own Mile Record

RIPON, Wisconsin – The Ripon track and field programs competed in their final home meet of the regular season Saturday, hosting the Dick Hendricks Invite inside the Willmore Center on a snowy Senior Day.

The men won the meet as a team, while the women took fifth against a field that included competition from Division I, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA schools.

Highlighting the day was Jenny Cortes shattering her own school record in the mile. Taking first with a time of 5:02.70, she eclipsed her previous record set last season by nearly six seconds.

In the men's 4x200 relay, Ripon's team of Jacoby Cefalu, Logan Vander Galien, Finley Manning and Jacob Davies took first with a time of 1:30.32, beating out Marquette's relay team. In the next relay, the 1600m sprint medley relay, JD Penson, Elijah Barajas, Amir Williams and Aiden Brobst crossed the finish line first in 3:43.32. Christian Kuwaye ran an efficient mile, taking second with a time of 4:26.70.

Ripon went 1-2 in the always entertaining 200-meter dash – Cefalu won the event in 22.11, while Davies was right behind him in 22.54. Both Zak Ladage and Dorian Phillips qualified for the 60-meter hurdle finals – Ladage took fourth in 8.81, while Phillips placed seventh in 9.10. In the 60-meter dash finals, Vander Galien was the runner-up with a quick time of 7.09.

The Red Hawks also found success in the 800-meter run as Rainier Villanueva (fourth place, 1:58.09) and Adisun Romprey (1:58.23) recorded top five marks. In the men's 3K, Jaxon Hornby finished third with a 9:30.72 showing. In the final men's race of the day, the 4x400 relay, Ripon's team of Kuwaye, Brobst, Romprey and Villanueva finished third with a mark of 3:35.85.

On the women's side, the Red Hawks started the meet with a win in the 1600m sprint medley relay as Devin Ibarra, Jenna Erickson, Tatum Trudell and Minnie Hoffman took down their Lawrence counterparts in 4:31.23. In addition to Cortes, Kiki Sherman also placed in the top five in the mile (fourth place, 5:26.28). In the long-distance 5K, Greta Mahler placed third in 21:16.95.

Ripon's excellence continued in the 400-meter run, as Madylyn Woyak took third with a time of 1:01.98. At the end of the meet, Ripon's 4x400 relay squad of Cortes, Sherman, Heleyna Weiss and Woyak won the event with a time of 4:12.12.

In field events, Ben Fisher was his customary dominant self in the high jump, winning the event with a top mark of 2.00m. Kyan Lins took third in the same event (1.90m) to show Ripon's depth. Ripon had two of the top four men's long jump finishers in Vander Galien (second, 6.42m) and Davies (fourth, 6.39m). Noah Hanson produced the third-best shot put with a toss of 13.99m, while Braedy Picard finished fifth in the same event (13.08m). Picard also took fifth in the weight throw (13.63m), while Nicole Arnhold finished fifth in the triple jump (10.13m).

On Friday night, several Red Hawks ran at the Midwest Elite event on the campus of UW-Whitewater. Joley Berger took 11th in the women's 5K with a time of 18:09.95, now the fastest 5K time in the Midwest Conference.
