RIPON, Wisconsin – The Ripon softball program rallied from a seventh-inning, game one deficit on Saturday afternoon at Tracy Field, using a two-run, walk-off double by freshman
Karissa Jenz to lift the Red Hawks to a 5-4 win over Monmouth.
Ripon (7-15, 5-1 MWC) won its third consecutive game in the afternoon finale, run-ruling the Scots (4-22, 0-4 MWC) 10-2 in six innings.
Game one was a pitchers' duel between the sides, even though both teams had chances in the early innings. Tied at zero in the bottom of the fourth, Ripon struck first on a bases-loaded walk by
Alayna Sadowska. The Red Hawks scored twice more in the fifth, as
Nadiyah Huizar scored on a Monmouth error and Jenz plated
Maddie Heisler with a sacrifice bunt.
The Scots responded in the sixth, going ahead with a four-run inning. A two-run single, followed by another RBI single and a fielder's choice, gave the visitors their first lead of the day.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Ripon received a gift when the Scots' first baseman dropped a routine fly ball to begin the inning. Then, another error put runners at the corners with nobody out.
Maddie Hablewitz loaded the bases by reaching on a fielder's choice, and Jenz drove a double deep into left field to score two runs and give Ripon its fourth Midwest Conference win of the season.
Ashlynn Donahue was terrific on the mound for Ripon. Though she took the no-decision, she went six innings and allowed just six hits with four earned runs. Sadowska got the win, tossing the seventh inning.
Ashlyn Schultz was the only Red Hawk with multiple hits as the freshman went 2-for-3. Jenz had a trio of RBI, while Heisler (1x4, 2 runs), Hablewitz (1x4), and Huizar (1x3, 2 runs) also recorded base hits.
Ripon pounced on Monmouth early in game two, scoring four runs in the second inning. Heisler scored
Kayla Cruz on a sacrifice fly before Jenz recorded a three-run, inside-the-park home run to pad Ripon's lead. The Red Hawks scored once more in the fourth, as
Arianna Alirez plated Jenz with an RBI single.
Monmouth answered in the fifth, scoring runs on consecutive at-bats to cut the deficit to 5-2. Ripon had plans of ending the game early, and did just that with a five-run sixth inning. Hablewitz scored Heisler on a sacrifice bunt, and
Hadley Berendsen joined the party with a two-run double. Cruz singled her home to extend the lead, and Huizar delivered the game-ending, RBI single to give Ripon the six-inning win.
Alirez had a perfect game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Berendsen (2x3, 2 RBI, run, walk) and Cruz (2x4, RBI, 2 runs) also had multi-hit outings, while Ripon had twice as many hits as Monmouth (12-6).
Sadowska got her second win of the day in the circle, pitching all six innings. She scattered six hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.
