RIPON, Wisconsin –
Ashlyn Schultz of the Ripon softball program hit a walk-off, three-run home run in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader as the Red Hawks rallied to defeat Lakeland 5-4 at Tracy Field.
In the nightcap, Ripon (9-16) fell 15-5 to Lakeland (13-11) in five innings.
After pitching a scoreless first inning in game one, Ripon went right to work in the bottom half of the inning. With runners at the corners and one out,
Arianna Alirez singled home
Maddie Hablewitz to get Ripon on the board.
Lakeland answered in the fourth, putting up three runs to go ahead 3-1. The lead grew to 4-1 in the fifth on a Ripon error.
Down to its last three outs in the seventh, the Red Hawks got in business quickly.
Maddie Heisler doubled to lead off the inning before advancing to third on a wild pitch. After Hablewitz walked, pinch runner
Jayden Markus stole second to put two in scoring position. That set the stage for Schultz to be the hero, giving Ripon its fifth consecutive win.
Schultz was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with 4 RBI and a run scored. Heisler (1x4, run), Hablewitz (1x2, 2 walks, 2 runs),
Alayna Sadowska (1x2), Alirez (1x3, RBI) and
Hadley Berendsen (1x2) also recorded base hits.
Sadowska got the win on the mound, her seventh of the season. Going a full seven innings and 133 pitches, she allowed seven hits and three earned runs.
Game two was all Muskies from the onset. The visitors scored three in the first, five in the second and three in the third to lead 11-0.
Ripon responded in the bottom half of the inning, as a single by Schultz plated Heisler to get the Red Hawks on the board.
Lakeland got the run back in the top of the fourth, but an RBI double by
Nadiyah Huizar in the bottom half of the inning gave Ripon life. Lakeland scored three more in the fifth, but Ripon was not done.
Sydney Swanson,
Angie Martorello and Huizar recorded back-to-back RBI singles, pulling Ripon within 10. However, a strikeout and groundout ended the game with two on base.
Swanson (2x3, RBI, 2 runs), Martorello (2x2, RBI) and Huizar (2x3, 2 RBI) all had multiple hits as the bottom third of the order went a combined 6-for-8. Hablewitz (1x3), Schultz (1x2, RBI, run) and Alirez (1x2, walk) contributed hits as well.
Ashlynn Donahue took the loss in the circle, pitching all five innings.
