Early Lead Evaporates in Rubber Match at Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Ripon baseball program could not preserve an early three-run lead on Sunday afternoon, falling 7-4 at Grinnell in the rubber match at Pioneer Park.

Ripon (14-20, 7-9 MWC) got on the board early, as the first two runners of the game reached base. A double steal by Jason Clark and Evan Olson plated Clark, though Ripon only got one run in the opening frame. Then in the third, the lead grew to 3-0 on a fielder's choice and an error by Grinnell (20-16, 8-9 MWC).

The hosts responded in the third, scoring three runs of their own to even the score, but Clark got the lead right back for Ripon in the fourth on a one-out, RBI single. The back-and-forth continued in the bottom of the fourth, as the Red Hawks surrendered a pinch-hit, three-run homer with two outs for Grinnell's first lead of the afternoon.

The Pioneers used the long ball to extend their lead in the seventh, as a solo shot made Ripon's deficit 7-4. The Red Hawks brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not score and dropped the series finale.

Olson (3x5, run) and Brock Peterson (3x4) both had three-hit days for Ripon while Clark (2x3, RBI, 2 walks, run) and Alex Pankratz (2x4, 2 RBI) also had multi-hit outings. The Red Hawks had a slim 13-12 hits advantage in the game.

Rex Bayer got the start on the mound for Ripon, taking the loss. He pitched four innings and allowed seven hits with five earned runs. Adam Mellema and Brett Tetzlaff finished off the last four innings, allowing a combined five hits and one run.

NEXT UP: Ripon hosts Lawrence on Wednesday, April 30 at 1 p.m. The teams will resume their suspended game from last Tuesday in the top of the eighth with Ripon leading 16-14. The Red Hawks will be the road team in that game. Then, the schools will play their regularly scheduled contest with Ripon as the home team.
