RIPON, Wisconsin – The Ripon softball program snapped its losing streak in a big way Friday afternoon, routing Maranatha Baptist 14-1 (5 innings) and 15-0 (5 innings) at Tracy Field.
Ripon (11-23) tossed a combined no-hitter in game one, as
Alayna Sadowska and
Delaney Sherry were nearly spotless against Maranatha Baptist (0-31) in the opener.
The Red Hawks got going right away in game one, scoring in the opening inning on a one-out, RBI single by
Ashlyn Schultz. The big inning came in the second, when Ripon scored 12 times on 10 hits.
Kayla Cruz singled home a run before a fielder's choice and error plated another. Then, an RBI double by
Maddie Heisler scored Ripon's fourth run, and
Karissa Jenz singled home Heisler moments later. The next at-bat, Schultz singled home Jenz and a wild pitch plated home Schultz to make the score 7-0.
Still with one out, RBI singles by
Emily Kasuboski and Cruz opened Ripon's lead to 9-0. Sadowska then scored on an error, and run-scoring hits by Jenz and Schultz gave Ripon a 13-0 lead after two innings.
Maranatha Baptist got a run back in the fourth, but Ripon countered with one of its own in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Schultz. Sherry pitched a perfect fifth to secure the win.
Schultz was a perfect 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and a run scored to lead Ripon offensively. Heisler also had a three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Jenz (2x4, 2 RBI, run),
Sydney Swanson (2x2), Kasuboski (2x2, RBI, 2 runs) and Cruz (2x3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) also had multi-hit games as Ripon totaled 15 hits in the game.
Sadowska got the start on the mound, pitching two scoreless innings. Sherry got the win – her first of the season – by throwing three innings with three strikeouts.
In game two, Ripon did the heavy lifting in the first two innings. Schultz kicked off an eight-run first inning with a two-run double before
Arianna Alirez added another on a double. The next at-bat, Ripon's lead grew to 4-0 thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Hadley Berendsen.
Still with one out, a two-run triple by Cruz broke the game open even more. After Heisler reached on a fielder's choice to score Ripon's seventh run, Jenz doubled her home to close out the first inning barrage.
Four more runs crossed home in the second. Cruz singled home a pair with two outs before consecutive doubles from
Nadiyah Huizar and Heisler gave the Red Hawks a 12-0 lead after two innings.
Ripon starter
Ashlynn Donahue tossed a pair of perfect innings in the third and fourth, and Ripon scored three more times in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Huizar, an RBI triple by Jenz and a Sabercat error.
Sherry pitched the fifth, facing the minimum and inducing a double play to close out the game.
Four Red Hawks had two hits apiece, totaling 80% of Ripon's hits in the game: Heisler (2x2, 2 RBI, 3 runs, walk), Jenz (2x2, 2 RBI, 2 runs, walk), Alirez (2x4, RBI, run) and Cruz (2x3, 4 RBI, run).
Donahue picked up her first collegiate win, throwing the first four innings. She allowed just one hit and struck out six batters.
NEXT UP: Ripon hosts Grinnell on Saturday, May 3. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
