Red Hawks Tie Muskies, Garcia Scores First Career Goal

RIPON, Wis. -- Ripon College women's soccer ended even against visiting Lakeland University this Wednesday, Sept 3. Senior Juliana Garcia (Quito, Ecuador, SEK Los Valles International School) earned her first career goal to secure the tie for the Red Hawks.

The Red Hawks faced immediate difficulties from the visitors. The Muskies would hit the back of the net from outside the 18-yard box, earning the first goal of the game on the first attempted shot just two minutes into play. Despite the early misfortune, Ripon would continually pepper the opposing goalie, pushing forward with solid attempts throughout the first. One such opportunity would force Lakeland into a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the hosts in the 39th minute. Garcia would convert the attempt for her first goal of a four-year Ripon soccer career, putting the Red Hawks even with the visitors 1-1 going into the second half.

The second half would see Ripon up the intensity, attacking the Lakeland goal with renewed focus. A series of quick shots nearly went Ripon's way ten minutes into proceedings, with sophomore Addison Misner (Richland, Mich., Gull Lake HS) putting an attempt off the top woodwork in a hectic exchange. Despite a collection of good looks in the final 45 minutes of play, Lakeland's goalie would hold strong, with the final whistle confirming a 1-all tie.

Ripon's offense would generate consistent looks for the program, with the Red Hawks earning 19 shot attempts, 14 of which were on goal, while the Muskies shot just three times, with two on target attempts. Both teams would commit to equivalently physical play styles, with the hosts being called for 12 penalties to the visitors' 14.

Ripon College women's soccer returns to action Saturday, Sept 6, against the visiting Rockford University. The Regents enter the contest 0-2 this season, coming off a 0-10 loss to Elmhurst University at the time of writing.
