Breakout Game for Schmitz Sparks 3-1 Win Over Cornell

RIPON, Wis. -- It was a night to remember for freshman Lizzy Schmitz (Sheboygan, Wis., Sheboygan Lutheran HS), as she scored the first two goals of her career to lead the Ripon College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Cornell College on Tuesday at Hopp Stadium.

Schmitz wasted no time making an impact, finding the back of the net just three minutes into the match off an assist from sophomore Addison Misner (Richland, Mich., Gull Lake HS). She doubled the Red Hawks' lead in the 26th minute, finishing a setup from freshman Cecilia Strom (Ripon, Wis., Ripon HS) to put Ripon ahead 2-0.

Coming out of halftime, Ripon extended its advantage when junior Martina Palazzolo (Sterling Heights, Mich., Utica Ford HS) netted her first goal of the season in the 48th minute. The scoring play was set up by strong ball movement, with both Misner and Schmitz assisting Palazzolo on the goal. Cornell cut the deficit in the 52nd minute on a goal, but Ripon's back line and senior goalkeeper Britt Hable (Oshkosh, Wis., Oshkosh West HS) held firm the rest of the way.

The Red Hawks finished with a 14-9 edge in shots, including a 5-6 margin in shots on goal. Hable tallied five saves to secure the win.

With the result, Ripon improves its record while earning its first home conference win of the season. The Red Hawks will look to carry their momentum into Saturday, Oct 3, when they travel to face Grinnell College at 11 a.m.
