RIPON, Wis. -- The Ripon College men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Luther College on Saturday night at Hopp Stadium during Homecoming weekend.
Luther opened the scoring in the 41st minute, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Norse added two goals early in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 59th and 62nd minutes to extend their advantage to 3-0.
The Red Hawks continued to battle and generated several scoring opportunities in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Covarrubias (Madison, Wis., Madison West HS) kept Ripon within reach with eight saves on the night, helping limit Luther's offensive chances.
Ripon broke through in the 85th minute when junior Seth Schroeder (Iron Ridge, Wis., Winnebago Lutheran Academy) scored his team's lone goal. Senior Matthew Hegge (Lake Villa, Ill., Warren HS) assisted on the play, setting up Schroeder to put the Red Hawks on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 3-1. Despite the late push, Ripon was unable to close the gap further.
Schroeder led Ripon with three shots, all of which were on target, while sophomore Isaiah Martinez (Las Vegas, Nev., Palo Verde HS) and junior Ian Martinez (Chicago, Ill., Notre Dame College Prep) each recorded a shot on goal. The Red Hawks finished with six shots, including five on target, and earned two corner kicks.
Ripon moves on from the Homecoming matchup and returns to the road on Tuesday, Oct 13, when it travels to Maranatha Baptist University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3pm.
