RIPON, Wis. -- The Ripon College women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over Cornell College Wednesday night at Hopp Stadium, improving to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Midwest Conference play.
The Red Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as sophomore Lizzy Schmitz (Sheboygan, Wis., Sheboygan Lutheran HS) found the back of the net in the 11th minute to give Ripon a 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, senior Martina Palazzolo (Sterling Heights, Mich., Utica Ford HS) doubled the advantage with an assist from senior Rebecca Roszel (Fremont, Calif., Irvington HS), putting the Red Hawks ahead 2-0.
Ripon continued to control the offensive momentum throughout the opening half, outshooting Cornell 13-3. Senior Alyssa Klementzos (Salem, Wis., Westosha Central HS) led the Red Hawks with multiple scoring opportunities, while sophomore Kaitlan Adkins (Milwaukee, Wis., Brown Deer HS) kept Cornell off the scoreboard with three saves in goal.
The Red Hawks added to their lead early in the second half when junior Lauren Janisch (Burnsville, Minn., Burnsville HS) scored in the 53rd minute, with Schmitz providing the assist. The goal extended Ripon's advantage to 3-0.
Ripon finished the night with a 23-9 advantage in shots and held Cornell without a goal for the shutout. Adkins recorded three saves in the victory.
The Red Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct 10, hosting Luther College at Hopp Stadium for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
