RIPON, Wis. -- The Ripon College men's basketball team came up just short in a back-and-forth Midwest Conference battle Tuesday night, falling 76-74 to Cornell College inside Weiske Gymnasium.
Ripon (4-19, 4-10 MWC) placed four players in double figures and shot a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line, but a late Cornell push proved to be the difference.
Sophomore Keenan Rahn (Omro, Wis., Omro HS) and junior Jack Field (Wisconsin Dells, Wis., Marian University) led the Red Hawks with 15 points apiece. Rahn went 5-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, while adding three rebounds. Field knocked down three three-pointers, dished out four assists and grabbed three rebounds in a strong all-around effort.
Junior Seth Bunders (Wauzeka, Wis., Wauzeka-Steuben HS) added 10 points and a team-high four assists, while junior Marshawn Robinson (Milwaukee, Wis., Waukesha South HS) chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Anton Kilde (Portage, Wis., Portage HS) provided a spark off the bench with 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting, including two three-pointers.
Ripon trailed 35-29 at halftime but responded with an efficient second half, shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 6-of-16 from three-point range over the final 20 minutes. The Red Hawks controlled the paint with 30 points inside and forced 15 turnovers, converting those opportunities into 18 points.
A three-pointer from Field early in the second half gave Ripon its first lead of the night, and the teams traded baskets down the stretch. A late three from Bunders and key baskets from Robinson and freshman Joey Daun (Neenah, Wis., Neenah HS) kept the Red Hawks within striking distance in the final minute.
Despite the late rally, Ripon was unable to complete the comeback as the final possession came up short.
The Red Hawks return to action Saturday, Feb 14, when they travel to Knox College for a 1pm Midwest Conference matchup.
