EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The Ripon College men's and women's tennis teams were on the road Saturday, both falling 7-0 to UW-Eau Claire at the Menard Tennis Center.
On the men's side, UW-Eau Claire (4-1) secured the doubles point with wins at all three positions. Senior Caleb Sippel (Appleton, Wis., Appleton North HS) and sophomore Kyle Flook (Sheboygan, Wis., Sheboygan South HS) battled at No. 1 doubles before dropping a competitive 6-4 decision. Junior Corey Mooney (Greenfield, Wis., Greenfield HS) and senior Austin Stevens (Mukwonago, Wis., Mukwonago HS) fell 6-0 at No. 2, while freshman Brandon Yanez (Ripon, Wis., Ripon HS) and Emerson Hendricks (Ripon, Wis., Ripon HS) were defeated 6-1 at No. 3.
In singles play, the Blugolds continued their momentum. Sippel faced a tough matchup at No. 1 singles, falling 6-1, 6-0. Stevens competed at No. 2 and pushed the second set to a tiebreak after dropping the first set 6-0. He forced extra points but ultimately came up short 7-6 (7-2). Mooney fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, and Flook was defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Hendricks (No. 5) and Yanez (No. 6) rounded out the lineup, each battling in straight-set losses.
The women's team (5-14) also faced a tough challenge against UW-Eau Claire (6-4). The Blugolds swept doubles to claim the early advantage. Sophomore Josie Rondestvedt (Altoona, Wis., Altoona HS) and senior Hadley Berendsen (Kimberly, Wis., Kimberly HS) dropped a 6-2 decision at No. 1 doubles, while seniors Allison Larsen (Lodi, Wis., Lodi HS) and Catherine Skoglund (Roberts, Wis., St. Croix Central HS) fell 6-0 at No. 2. Senior Allison Pavlovec (Decorah, Iowa, Decorah HS) and sophomore Isabella Engstrom (Ripon, Wis., Ripon HS) were defeated 6-2 at No. 3.
In singles, Rondestvedt competed at No. 1 before falling 6-1, 6-0. Larsen (No. 2) was defeated 6-2, 6-2, and Berendsen (No. 3) dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match. Junior Jessi Griepentrog (Freedom, Wis., Fox Valley Lutheran HS) fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Skoglund was defeated 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5, and junior Isabella DeMeuse (Hartford, Wis., Hartford Union HS) rounded out the lineup at No. 6.
The men's team (3-11) will look to regroup quickly as they return to action March 7 at Illinois Wesleyan University. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. The women's team will next compete on their upcoming spring break trip as they continue to build experience and momentum.
