Ripon Baseball Explodes for 16 Runs in Florida Opener

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Ripon opened its spring break trip in Florida with a strong offensive performance, defeating Ramapo 16-10 on Saturday. The Red Hawks pounded out 17 hits and drew 10 walks, using several big innings to pull away late.

Ripon struck first in the opening inning when senior Kyler Hickman (Tracy, Calif., Merrill F. West HS) came around to score on a sacrifice fly from senior Alex Pankratz (Waupaca, Wis., Waupaca HS), but the Red Hawks found themselves trailing early after Ramapo plated four runs in the bottom half. Ripon chipped away over the next few innings before erupting for a decisive stretch in the seventh and eighth.

Trailing 10-6 in the seventh, Ripon surged in front with a six-run inning. Freshman Raidan Shibayama (Honolulu, Hawaii, Punahou School) delivered a two-run single to start the rally, while senior Jack Anderson (Oconomowoc, Wis. Oconomowoc HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another run. Sophomore Alex Ramus (Appleton, Wis., Appleton North HS) added a two-run single and freshman Trey Page (Land O Lakes, Fla., Land O Lakes HS) capped the inning with an RBI hit to give the Red Hawks a 12-10 lead.

Ripon added insurance in the eighth, scoring four more runs behind RBI hits from Pankratz, junior Crete Slattery (Lake Geneva, Wis., Badger HS), and another two-run single from Ramus to extend the lead to 16-10.

Page led the offense with four hits and two RBIs, while Ramus drove in a team-high four runs. Slattery collected three hits, and Anderson added two hits and two RBIs. Hickman scored four times and reached base four times, while Pankratz finished with three runs scored and two RBIs.

On the mound, senior Griffin Klein (Green Bay, Wis., Notre Dame Academy HS) earned the win in relief, and freshman Matthew Lu (Richmond Hill, Ont., Bill Crothers Secondary School) secured the save with three scoreless innings to close out the victory.

With the win, Ripon improves to 1-6 on the season and begins its Florida trip on a high note. Continuing their spring break trip, the Red Hawks take on Rutgers-Camden and Macalester College on Sunday, Mar 15, at 9am and 12:15pm, respectively.
