Softball Opens Florida Trip with Pair of Wins

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Ripon College softball team opened its spring break trip in Florida with a pair of victories on Friday, defeating North Central (Ill.) 4-2 before topping Augsburg 5-1 later in the afternoon.

Game 1: Ripon 4, North Central 2

Ripon used timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to take the opener. North Central scored the game's first run in the top of the first, but Ripon answered in the third inning.

Freshman Callissa Keller (La Valle, Wis., Wonewoc-Center HS) doubled and later scored on a double by sophomore Ashlyn Schultz (Denmark, Wis., Denmark HS) to tie the game. Later in the inning, senior Jayden Markus (Sorento, Ill., Greenville HS) singled to bring Schultz home and give Ripon a 2-1 lead.

Ripon added another run in the fourth when sophomore Maddie Heisler (Appleton, Wis., Appleton East HS) singled and stole second before Keller delivered an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-1. In the fifth inning, Markus reached base and scored on a double by senior Kayla Cruz (Anaheim, Calif., Anaheim HS) to make it 4-1.

Heisler, Keller, Schultz, and freshman Carli Moldenhauer (Oconomowoc, Wis., Oconomowoc HS) each recorded two hits as Ripon finished with 10 hits in the win. Keller drove in a run and scored once, while Schultz and Markus each added an RBI.

In the circle, freshman Peyton Vandeloo (Kaukauna, Wis., Freedom HS) went the distance to earn the win, striking out eight while allowing two runs.

Game 2: Ripon 5, Augsburg 1

Ripon followed with another strong performance in the second game, using patience at the plate and solid pitching to secure a 5-1 victory.

Ripon broke the scoreless tie in the second inning when Moldenhauer reached on an error that allowed freshman Presley Koss (Palmyra, Wis., Palmyra-Eagle HS) to score. The Red Hawks added another run in the fourth as senior Arianna Alirez (Anchorage, Alaska, Alaska Middle College School) singled and later scored on a passed ball.

Ripon extended the lead in the fifth when freshman Cyriana Reinwald (Horicon, Wis., Horicon HS) reached on an error that brought home Moldenhauer. The Red Hawks put the game away in the seventh with RBI hits from Alirez and sophomore Hannah Vargas (Tustin, Calif., Foothill HS) to push the advantage to 5-1.

Alirez led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Vargas added a hit and an RBI. Moldenhauer scored once and reached base twice in the win.

Sophomore Alayna Sadowska (Oshkosh, Wis., Oshkosh West HS) tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing one run on five hits while working through seven innings to earn the victory.
