AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Ripon baseball fell to Southern Maine, 19-8, Sunday morning during its spring break trip in Florida.
Southern Maine struck early with three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Ripon answered in the bottom half of the second with a five-run inning to pull within one. Freshman Raidan Shibayama (Honolulu, Hawaii, Punahou School) sparked the rally with a two-run double, while freshman Nolan Hollander (Crystal Lake, Ill., Crystal Lake Central) added an RBI single. Sophomore Bailey Schepp (Oakfield, Wis., Oakfield HS) and freshman Trey Page (Land O Lakes, Fla., Land O Lakes HS) each drove in a run to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Huskies responded in the third with a three-run home run to extend their lead to 9-5. Ripon picked up another run in the bottom of the inning when senior Alex Pankratz (Waupaca, Wis., Waupaca HS) stole third and later scored on an error to make it 9-6.
Southern Maine added three more runs in the fourth inning, but Ripon again answered in the bottom half. Schepp opened the frame with a single and came around to score before junior Crete Slattery (Lake Geneva, Wis., Badger HS) delivered a two-run single to bring the Red Hawks back within four at 12-8.
Southern Maine pulled away late, scoring four runs in the sixth inning and adding insurance runs in the seventh and ninth to secure the 19-8 victory.
Shibayama led Ripon at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Slattery also recorded two hits and drove in two runs, while Hollander, Schepp, graduate student Gabriel Kennedy (DeForest, Wis., Northwestern St. Paul) and Page each added a hit for the Red Hawks.
Ripon continues its spring break schedule Wednesday, Mar 18, with a 12:30pm matchup against UW-La Crosse.
