BELOIT, Wis. -- Ripon came up short in both ends of a doubleheader at Beloit on Saturday, falling 3-1 in the opener before dropping a heartbreaker, 10-9, in game two.
In game one, Ripon was locked in a pitcher's duel early before Beloit broke through in the fifth inning. A two-run double accounted for the difference, as the Red Hawks were held to just one run despite eight hits.
Junior Crete Slattery (Lake Geneva, Wis., Badger HS) provided the lone highlight offensively with a solo home run in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Beloit responded in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead back to two.
Sophomore Brady Wotruba (Pulaski, Wis., Pulaski HS) turned in a strong outing on the mound, going 7.2 innings and allowing just three runs on five hits, but was tacked with the loss. Freshman Nolan Hollander (Crystal Lake, Ill., Crystal Lake Central) and Slattery each recorded two hits to lead the offense.
Game two told a much different story, as Ripon's bats came alive early. The Red Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer from Slattery, then exploded for four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to build a commanding 9-2 advantage.
Senior Jack Anderson (Oconomowoc, Wis., Oconomowoc HS) fueled the surge, finishing with three runs scored and three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the third inning. Senior Kyler Hickman (Tracy, Calif., Merrill F. West HS) added a pair of hits and an RBI, while freshman Raidan Shibayama (Honolulu, Hawaii, Punahou School) and Slattery also drove in runs during the big innings.
However, Beloit chipped away at the lead over the middle innings. The Buccaneers scored three in the fifth, added another in the sixth, and took the lead with a two-run seventh inning.
Ripon's offense stalled late, going scoreless over the final five innings as Beloit's bullpen settled in. The game was ultimately decided in the ninth, when Beloit plated the tying and winning runs to complete the comeback.
Despite outhitting Beloit 10-9, Ripon was hurt by 12 walks issued by its pitching staff and couldn't hold onto the early momentum.
Ripon falls to 3-18 on the season and will look to bounce back as the series shifts home for the final game, scheduled for Sunday at 12pm.
