RIPON, Wis. -- Ripon split its home doubleheader with Lake Forest on Saturday afternoon at Tracy Field, riding a strong pitching performance to take game one before dropping game two.
The Red Hawks edged the Foresters 2-1 in the opener behind another standout outing from Peyton Vandeloo (Kaukauna, Wis., Freedom HS). The freshman right-hander went the distance, allowing just one run on six hits while working around six walks to improve to 10-3 on the season.
After four scoreless innings, Ripon broke through in the fifth when freshman Sarah Marcheske (Waukesha, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) launched a solo home run to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead. Lake Forest answered in the sixth to even things at 1-1, but Ripon delivered in the clutch in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Desirae Kallstrom (DeForest, Wis., DeForest HS) led off the frame with a double and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Maddie Heisler (Appleton, Wis., Appleton East HS), lifting the Red Hawks to the walk-off victory.
Kallstrom and Marcheske each recorded two hits to pace Ripon offensively in game one.
In game two, Lake Forest jumped out early and never looked back, defeating Ripon 6-2 to earn the split. The Foresters plated two runs in the first and added two more in the fourth to build a 4-0 advantage.
Ripon got on the board in the sixth in unconventional fashion, as sophomore Karissa Jenz () stole home to cut into the deficit. The Red Hawks added another run in the seventh on an RBI from Marcheske, but Lake Forest responded with two insurance runs in the top half of the inning to seal the win.
Freshman Carli Moldenhauer (Oconomowoc, Wis., Oconomowoc HS), senior Kayla Cruz (Anaheim, Calif., Anaheim HS), Kallstrom, and junior Nadiyah Huizar (Buena Park, Calif., Buena Park HS) each collected hits for Ripon in the loss.
The Red Hawks will look to bounce back on Tuesday, April 21, when they travel to Greenville University for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
