RIPON, Wis. -- The Ripon College men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over Benedictine University on Saturday afternoon at Hopp Stadium, scoring twice in the second half to improve to 2-1-1 on the season.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Ripon broke through in the 56th minute. Sophomore Easton Wolfram (Sun Prairie, Wis., Lakeside Lutheran HS) found the back of the net at the 55:33 mark, with senior Thomas Geocaris (Green Bay, Wis., Notre Dame Academy) providing the assist to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
Benedictine answered just over two minutes later on a penalty kick to even the score at 1-1.
The Red Hawks continued to pressure the Benedictine defense and eventually regained the lead late in the match. With just under three minutes remaining, sophomore Carmine Di Miele (Elmhurst, Ill., York Community HS) scored his first goal of the afternoon, finishing a pass from junior Seth Schroeder (Iron Ridge, Wis., Winnebago Lutheran Academy) at the 87:05 mark. The goal put Ripon ahead 2-1, a lead the Red Hawks would hold through the final whistle.
Ripon goalkeeper senior Drew Seyfer (Thiensville, Wis., Homestead HS) played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves to help preserve the victory.
The Red Hawks finished the match with nine shots, putting four on goal, while Benedictine recorded 12 shots with six on target. Ripon also held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
With the victory, Ripon improves to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Red Hawks will return to action Wednesday, Sept 16, at 4:30pm, when they host UW-Stout at Hopp Stadium.
