STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- The Ripon College men's soccer team battled UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday night, falling 1-0 to the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point got on the scoreboard early, finding the back of the net, on a Ripon own goal, in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The goal would prove to be the only scoring of the night.
Ripon created several opportunities throughout the contest, recording eight shots, including two on goal. Sophomore Moaye Yao (Oregon, Wis., Vel Phillips Memorial HS) registered one of the Red Hawks' two shots on target, while junior Seth Schroeder (Iron Ridge, Wis., Winnebago Lutheran Academy) recorded two total shots. Senior Matthew Hegge (Lake Villa, Ill., Warren HS), senior Ivan Barrientos (Round Lake, Ill., Round Lake HS), freshman Tyler Anderson (Rockford, Ill., Boylan Catholic HS) and freshman Michael Martinez (Omaha, Neb., Roncalli Catholic HS) also recorded shots for Ripon.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Red Hawks continued to pressure the Pointers in the second half. Schroeder recorded a pair of shots early in the half, while Barrientos added another in the 56th minute. Later in the half, Martinez and Anderson each registered shots, with Anderson's attempt in the 75th minute being saved. Freshman Sebastian Lopez (Palatine, Ill., Palatine HS) recorded Ripon's final shot of the evening in the closing minutes.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Drew Seyfer (Thiensville, Wis., Homestead HS) kept Ripon within striking distance throughout the contest, making five saves across 90 minutes. UW-Stevens Point finished with 16 shots, including five on goal.
Ripon also earned two corner kicks on the night while limiting the Pointers to two.
The Red Hawks will return to action Saturday, Oct 3, traveling to Illinois College for an 11am kickoff.
