BELOIT, Wis. - Ripon's men's swim team led by one point entering Friday's final event at Beloit College. In the end though, the Buccaneers, who finished last season with a sixth-place finish at the MWC Championships, were able to hold off the Red Hawks in that relay, en route to a 90-84 victory.
The Red Hawks won five of the meet's 10 events. Their most successful event came in the 200 freestyle, which saw Ripon place three of the top four swimmers. Kevin Polston won that event with a time of 1:58.14, followed by Tyler Rutkowski's second-place time of 2:07.92. Ben Jones was fourth in that event with a time of 2:15.99. Polston also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.60, while Rutkowski placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.34. Jonathan Newbery and David Peterkes also won an event, placing first in the 100 freestyle (50.33) and 500 freestyle (5:58.83), respectively. In that final relay of the day that decided the fate of the meet, Ripon's team of Newbery, Polston, Brian Schumacher and Jay Homan finished second, eight seconds behind the Buccaneers.
Ripon will be back in action again on Saturday, as they'll look to make a splash at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.
