RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Swimming in their first meet of the 2012-13 season, the Ripon men lost to UW-River Falls, 67-32. The Red Hawks saw four top-three finishes in the individual competition, with two of their relay teams also finishing with a top-three finish.
The only Red Hawk to win their event was Kevin Polston, who took first in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:01.60, which was nearly four seconds better than the next-best time. That was also less than six seconds shy of the school record in that event. Jonathan Newbery added a second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle, which saw him swim a time of 50.54. Tyler Rutkowski and Ben Jones added third place finishes in the 400 IM and 100 breaststroke with times of 5:08.03 and 1:23.75, respectively.
Ripon's relay teams also saw some success, finishing second in the 200 freestyle relay and third in the 200 medley relay. In the 200 freestyle, Polston and Newbery teamed up with Brian Schumacher and Nicholas Masterson to swim a time of 1:35.22, which was less than one second away from winning the event. Masterson and Schumacher were also a part of the 200 medley team, along with Rutkowski and David Peterkes, which swam a time of 1:50.54.
The Red Hawks will now prepare for their first and only home meet of the year, as they'll host Marquette University next Saturday. That meet will begin at 1 p.m. at Storzer Center in Ripon.
