Ripon Falls To Loras In Season Opener

Swimming in their first meet of the season Saturday, the Ripon men's and women's swimming teams combined to score 112 points in a dual meet loss at Loras College.

The Ripon men's team was led by Jonathan Newbery, who gave the men its only first place finisher, winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.90. Newbery added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.64. Andy Paloumpis also had a pair of top two finishes, as he placed second in both the 200 freestyle (1:57.07) and 100 butterfly (57.57). Quinton Maydaniuk also had a nice day, finishing in the top three in a trio of events. Maydaniuk took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.79), while placing third in both the 1000 Freestyle (11:30.70) and 500 freestyle (5:35.61).

Ripon's men also had success in the relay events, winning the 200 medley, as the team of Newbery, Paloumpis, Kevin Polston and Tyler Rutkowski swam a time of 1:45.56. The 200 freestyle relay team of David Peterkes, Alex Mehre, Matthew Brandfass and Nick Masterson added a second place finish with a time of 1:42.88.

On the women's side, Hannah Metz and Winona Holmes-Robbins excelled, each placing in the top two in multiple events. Metz finished second in both the 50 freestyle (26.90) and 100 freestyle (58.71), while Holmes-Robbins won the 100 butterfly (1:05.83) and placed second in the 200 IM (2:28.24).

In relay competition, the Ripon women's team of Holmes-Robbins, Metz, Sara Heitkamp and Rachella Bennett placed second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.84.

The Red Hawks will be back in action next weekend when they'll travel to Lawrence University on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a triangular with Lawrence and UW-River Falls.
