Ripon Wins One, Loses One

Box Score vs. Keene State
Box Score vs. Farmingdale State

CLERMONT, Fla. -
Ripon continued their trend of splitting a pair of games Thursday, winning their early game 5-4 against Keene State (N.H.) in nine innings, before losing 5-3 to Farmingdale State (N.Y.). The Red Hawks recorded 14 hits on the day, with 10 of those coming against Keene State.

Despite Ripon’s hit parade in the first game, their bats took a few innings to come alive. The Red Hawks (4-4) fell behind early, as Keene State (1-4) scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a passed ball and an RBI single, which was the only hit in the inning. Keene State added another run in the fourth when they scored on another RBI single.

Trailing 3-0, Ripon rallied in the fifth, behind five hits in the inning. Beth Ebben got the team on the board with an RBI double to right center and Stephanie Rieuwpassa tied the score when she plated two more runs with a single to left.

The teams remained deadlocked after seven frames, sending the game to extra innings. After no one scored in the eighth, Ripon took their first lead of the contest in the top of the ninth. Karisa Simonsen did the honors with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Ripon added an insurance run later in the inning, as Simonsen scored on a fielder’s choice.

That second run proved to be valuable, as Keene State hit an RBI single with no outs to cut the Red Hawks lead in half. With a runner at third and two outs, Keene State had an opportunity to tie the score again, but Rieuwpassa struck out the batter to end the game, giving her a 13 strikeout-game for the second time in her four starts this season.

Rieuwpassa (3-1) allowed just three hits in her nine innings of work, while just one of Keene State’s runs were earned. She also continued her blazing start to the season at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Simonsen also collected three hits, while Korrine Peterson recorded her first career multi-hit performance with two base knocks.

Ripon’s second game of the day also saw them fall behind early, as Farmingdale State (3-3) scored two runs in the top of the first on a single through the left side of the infield. Unlike the first game however, Ripon didn’t wait long to answer, as Ebben led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a groundout. The Red Hawks added two more runs in the second thanks to Rieuwpassa’s eighth double of the season, giving them a 3-2 advantage.

That lead lasted until the top of the sixth when Farmingdale scored on a wild pitch and a fielding error to grab a 4-3 lead. They added another run in the seventh on a single up the middle to cap the scoring.

Ripon collected four hits in the game, coming from Peterson, Rieuwpassa, Cassie Bilotto and Mallary Nissen. Nissen allowed three earned runs in 5.2 innings, while striking out six Farmingdale batters.

The Red Hawks will conclude their Spring Trip games tomorrow against Simmons (Mass.) and Bowdoin (Maine). Those games will be played at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively, at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
