Box Score vs. Hope
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Ripon's softball team will try to put Friday's performance behind them, as they suffered a pair of losses at the Dot Richardson Spring Games. They lost to North Central College 17-2 in five innings to start the day, before losing the second game 9-0 in six innings to Hope College.
The Red Hawks (2-6) began the day on a positive note, scoring their only two runs of the day in the top of the first against North Central (2-1).
Korrine Peterson scored the game's first run on a groundout by
Cassie Bilotto, while
Ashley Gnacinski scored the other on a two-out steal of home plate. That lead didn't last long, as North Central scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first on an error and an RBI single.
The Cardinals then blew the game wide open with a 12-run second, which saw 12 hits and 16 batters come to the plate. The big blow came midway through the damage on a grand slam over the right centerfield fence. North Central scored three more runs in the third to cap the scoring.
Peterson,
Stephanie Cartwright and
Cassie Olson recorded the only hits for the Red Hawks, two of which came in the opening inning.
The second game was a pitcher's duel compared to the first, as neither team scored until the third inning. That is when Hope (5-4) plated a pair of runs on two Ripon fielding errors to take the first lead of the contest. Hope added five runs in the fifth on four hits and another Ripon error, while also scoring twice in the sixth on two hits and one error.
Ripon finished with four hits in the game, coming from Peterson, Gnacinski, Cartwright and
Haylea Hoskins. Hoskins (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs in her six innings of work.
The Red Hawks will bring their Florida trip to a close on Saturday when they'll face Union College and the University of Chicago at 3 and 5 p.m. ET, respectively. Those games will both be played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
