Ripon Drops Two Games On Final Day of Florida Trip

Box Score vs. Union (N.Y.)
Box Score vs. University of Chicago

CLERMONT, Fla. -
Ripon ended their week-long trip to Florida with a pair of losses Saturday afternoon. The Red Hawks lost to Union (N.Y.) 9-4 in their first game, before falling 5-1 to the University of Chicago.

In the early game, Ripon (2-8) allowed at least one run in every inning. Union (2-0) scored two in the first on a double to right center, before Ripon cut that lead in half in the second on a delayed steal to score Stephanie Cartwright from third base.

Union got that run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single, before tacking on two more in the third on an RBI single and a passed ball. They would score twice in the fourth and once more in the fifth before Ripon would score again with a three-spot in the sixth. Ashley Parkkonen recorded the only RBI of that inning, as the other two scored on an error and another steal of home plate.

Korrine Peterson and Haylea Hoskins each recorded two hits for the Red Hawks, with Cartwright adding the team's only other base knock. Parkkonen (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs in six innings, while striking out four.

The second game was much more competitive, as neither team led by more than two runs in the first five frames. Chicago (2-0) struck first with a run in the opening inning on an RBI single to center field. They added another in the third on an RBI double, but Ripon kept things close with a run in the fourth when Courtney Bloomer singled to right to score Hoskins from second. That would be as close as the Red Hawks would get however, as Chicago scored two runs in the sixth and once more in the seventh to put the game away.

Ripon's five hits came from five different players. Ashley Gnacinski (2-4) took the loss, despite a quality start in which she allowed three earned runs on 11 hits.

The Red Hawks will now fly home to the Midwest where they will take part in next weekend's Augustana (Ill.) Invitational in Rock Island, Ill. They will begin that Invitational Saturday against Coe and Wartburg at Noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
