CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Ripon's softball team battled one ot the top teams in Division-III Saturday afternoon, dropping both games of a doubleheader agaisnt ninth-ranked Coe College. The Red Hawks lost the first game 11-0 before dropping the second, 8-0 in five innings.
In the first game, Coe (16-3) waited until the second inning to score, as they led off the inning with a home run to take the first lead of the contest. The Kohawks added four more runs on five hits in the third, which included a pair of two-run singles. They scored again in the sixth on another two-run single, before capping the scoring in the seventh with four more runs, the first of which was another leadoff home run.
Ripon's four hits in the game came off the bats of Korrine Peterson, Cassie Bilotto, Stephanie Cartwright and Courtny Bloomer. All 11 runs scored by Coe were earned, as the Red Hawks did not commit an error in the game.
The Kohawks completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in game two, as they wasted no time getting on the board with three runs in the first, coming on a home run, a triple and a single. They added three more in the second, which was assisted by a pair of Ripon errors. Coe capped the scoring in the third, scoring both runs on infield singles.
Ripon managed just two hits in the second game, coming from Haylea Hoskins and Ashley Parkkonen. Hoskins (0-2) started the game, with five of her six runs allowed being earned.
The Red Hawks will try to rebound on Sunday when they'll take on Blackburn and #21 Augustana (Ill.) at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
