Red Hawks Drop Two Close Games At Lawrence

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

APPLETON, Wis. -
Ripon held the lead at some point in both games of Thursday's doubleheader against Lawrence University, but at the end of each game, it was the Vikings who came out on top. The Red Hawks lost the first game 4-2, before dropping the nightcap 5-3.

Ripon (7-20, 4-7 MWC) scored first in game one, keyed by a leadoff single by Korrine Peterson in the top of the first. After a sacrifice bunt and a single by Stephanie Cartwright, Peterson scored on an attempted steal by Cartwright. Lawrence (14-8, 5-3 MWC) would tie things up in the bottom of the inning, before taking the lead with a run in the second and adding another in the third.

A leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth gave Lawrence a 4-1 lead, before Ripon tried to put together a rally in the sixth, which Peterson would start with a leadoff single. Cartwright then reached on a fielder's choice and would later score on an RBI single by Cassie Bilotto, but those were all the runs Ripon could muster.

Ripon recorded seven hits in the game, with Peterson the only Red Hawk to collect more than one hit. Ashley Gnacinski took the loss, allowing four runs in six innings, while striking out four and walking just one batter.

In the second game, Lawrence scored first with an RBI single in the first. Ripon tied the score in the fourth when a Cassie Olson single scored Gnacinski, who doubled to lead off the inning. Lawrence got that run back in the bottom of that inning, before the Red Hawks took their first lead of the contest with a pair of runs in the sixth. Olson tied the score with another run-scoring single that plated Gnacinski, while Cartwright put Ripon in the lead when she scored on a two-out wild pitch. That lead wouldn't last long, as the Vikings crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good, scoring on a pair of RBI doubles and a run-scoring single.

Ripon's six hits came from three different players, as Gnacinski was 3-for-3 at the dish, with Olson adding two hits and Anna Kasper recording the other. Gnacinski (5-12) pitched her second complete game of the day, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out two.

The Red Hawks won't get much time off, as they'll host Marian University Friday afternoon. That doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. at Tracy Field in Ripon, with LiveStats available at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal.
