KENOSHA, Wis. - Ripon lost both games of Tuesday's doubleheader at Carthage College, dropping the first game 9-2, before losing the second by a score of 7-2.
In the first game of the day, the Red Hawks (8-25) scored first, taking their only lead of the game in the top of the first when a
Cassie Bilotto single scored
Korrine Peterson. Carthage (16-10) then took the lead with three runs in the bottom of that inning, two of which came on a home run by Vicki Pyan.
Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth when Ripon pulled within one run on another RBI single by Bilotto. Carthage would widen the gap in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on six hits and would add another run in the sixth to put the game away.
Ripon finished with nine hits, with three coming off the bat of Bilotto and two more coming from
Ashley Parkkonen.
Ashley Gnacinski took the loss, while striking out six batters in her seven innings of work.
Carthage was led by Pyan who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.
The second game, like the first was close for the first few innings. Carthage broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the third, before adding two more in both the fourth and fifth and another run in the sixth. Ripon didn't get on the board until the seventh, scoring their only runs on a two-run home run to right field by Bilotto. That marked Ripon's first homer of the season and was Bilotto's 14th of her career, which moves her into fourth in school history.
Bilotto's homer was one of three Ripon hits in the game, with a single by Peterson and a double by Gnacinski accounting for the other two.
Haylea Hoskins suffered the loss in the circle, striking out two, without walking a batter in her six innings.
Carthage finished with 13 hits, led by Becky Cronk's 3-for-3 performance, scoring each time she got on base.
Ripon will bring their 2014 season to a close on Saturday with a single game against Grinnell College in a makeup game from the MWC Classic. That game will begin at Noon in Watertown, Wis.
