DePERE, Wis. - Ripon and St. Norbert found themselves in a see-saw battle Wednesday night, with the Green Knights coming out on top 59-57 in a game that featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes with neither team leading by more than six points. The Red Hawks shot 47 percent (22-47) from the field, while holding St. Norbert to 38 percent (20-53), but only went to the free throw line four times (2-4), compared to 19 free throw attempts (13-19) for the Green Knights.
Five of the game's 11 ties came in the first 13 minutes. After a Terrence Garner basket gave St. Norbert (3-1, 2-0 MWC) a 15-13 lead,
Elliot Hoerdemann gave Ripon (2-2, 1-1 MWC) the lead with one of his three first-half 3-pointers. Ripon didn't trail again until D.J. DeValk hit a 3-pointer for St. Norbert with two minutes left before halftime. A
Ty Sabin layup and a 3-pointer by
Cal Schultz gave Ripon the lead again, but a half-court prayer by Ben Bobinski was answered at the buzzer, giving St. Norbert a 29-27 lead at intermission.
Hoerdemann connected on another 3-pointer on Ripon's first possession of the second half to give them the lead once more. After the lead changed hands several more times, Ripon took their largest lead of six with just over eight minutes left in regulation thanks to a 12-3 run that was capped by a pair of Sabin jump shots. Bobinski then scored six consecutive points, which was followed by a DeValk basket and two more buckets by Bobinski to cap a 12-0 run and give St. Norbert their largest lead of six with three minutes to play.
Ripon never quit though, as Sabin cut that lead in half with a step back 3-pointer and Hoerdemann tied the game at 55 on the Red Hawks' next possession. Mitchell Reinthaler answered with a 3-pointer for the Green Knights. After a
Brendan McCoy layup, St. Norbert missed one of two free throws, giving Ripon an opportunity to win the game on the final possession, but their 3-point attempt went off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Sabin led the Red Hawks with 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Hoerdemann added 15 points, making all five of his 3-point attempts.
St. Norbert was led by DeValk's 20 points and four assists, while making 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Bobinski added 16 points and five rebounds, while Reinthaler chipped in with 10 points.
The Red Hawks will try to rebound from this loss on Saturday when they'll host Cornell College at 3 p.m. at Storzer Center in Ripon.
